Overview

NYFC Restaurant & Fresh Market, located on West Madison Street in Chicago, serves as a vibrant culinary beacon in East Garfield Park. On the surface, the establishment might seem unassuming, even rough around the edges, but stepping inside reveals a distinct blend of convenience store essentials and a surprisingly robust kitchen that caters to a diverse neighborhood clientele.

The main appeal at NYFC lies in its menu that champions hearty, flavorful sandwiches and seafood platters. Signature items like the Gyros Burger and the Super Italian Beef Sandwich pay homage to classic Chicago-style flavors but with a fresh, satisfying twist. The seafood offerings, including catfish and tilapia sandwiches, stand out for their light, flaky texture, balanced by crisp, well-seasoned sides such as their potato wedges and fries. For those wanting a shared indulgence, the steaming king crab legs, lobster tails, and jumbo shrimp combos bring a touch of coastal luxury right to the heart of the city.

NYFC’s atmosphere reflects its deep roots in the local community. The restaurant operates behind bulletproof glass, a nod to the neighborhood’s realities and an unusual but practical feature that ensures safety while maintaining warm and respectful service. This setup doesn’t hinder the welcoming nature of the staff, who deliver freshly prepared, made-to-order meals with genuine friendliness.

The space merges a convenience store environment with a full kitchen, providing patrons access to everyday necessities alongside a menu that surprises with quality and variety. The dual identity caters well to local residents seeking a quick meal, a hearty sandwich, or fresh seafood, without leaving their block. The all-day breakfast menu adds to the accessibility, meeting a variety of tastes any time of day.

NYFC’s strength lies in its ability to offer affordable, fresh, and well-executed dishes that resonate with its target audience—residents of Chicago’s west side who value convenience without compromising flavor or quality. Feedback consistently praises the juicy chicken, rich sandwiches, and the genuine care evident in every plate. While some patrons note minor hiccups, the overall experience is one of satisfaction and discovery.

Ultimately, NYFC Restaurant & Fresh Market embodies the spirit of a community hub where quality food and practical service coexist. It’s a place where tradition meets the everyday, delivering comfort and taste amid a challenging urban landscape.

I discovered NYFC Restaurant & Fresh Market after finding a menu in my mailbox and was drawn to some of the items featured particularly the breakfast items. My initial visit was unexpected because I honestly just wanted to get outdoors after being indoors most of the day, but decided to see if it was open because it was enroute to where I was headed at the time. And with most places being on odd schedule hours due to COVID-19, I was surprised to see that it was open which urged me to visit to see what is offered. The building is formerly known as Five Stars, a one stop shop that consisted of food, tobacco, cellular and restaurant that sat right next to Wallace's Catfish Corner which Wallace's has been vacant for sometime now. The exterior of NYFC appears like a simple convenient store, but once you enter it is a totally different vibe. Never did I expect everything to be located behind a bullet proof glass, but I understand why because it is a rough area. There are individuals within it that would visit with the sole purpose of not purchasing, but leaving with something. Behind the glass you will find items ranging from cleaning products, hygiene supplies, candy, drinks, ice cream, and a variety of convenience store items available that you have to point out in order for the employee to grab. As for restaurant food items available you there are burgers, gyros, submarine sandwiches, philly cheesesteaks, tacos & burritos, fish dinners, chicken wings & tenders, and seafood combinations. I did love the concept of two particular burgers: the Madison burger and the Westside burger which both look filling and both are in dedication to the westside of Chicago which I rarely encounter at restaurants on the westside. Out of all selections I ended up ordering a tilapia sandwich because it was the only sandwich that my tastebuds craved other than the catfish sandwich. And outside of the tilapia and catfish sandwiches, the breakfast is the only other interest I have and it is sold all day!. This place would have easily gotten five stars from me because I loved the tilapia sandwich as well as the fries, but both would of been better with my drink which was actually forgotten and I did pay for it. I will be more cautious of that when I order in the future, but I left it alone this time. I do see NYFC Restaurant & Market doing better than majority of the businesses within the area because it offers more and its prices are better. And given the fact that everything is behind a bullet proof glass thieves wont even consider visiting which is actually a good thing for the business. ~Blessings~ Thomas G

This place looks rough around the edges, both inside and out. However, the employees are always nice and respectful, even when there’s only one employee working. The main reason I created this post was because of the kitchen. The food from the kitchen is AMAZING!!! The fact that it’s fresh, always, and high quality ingredients, but for hood prices!!! You can’t bet it. Especially for the fact that they ring up hot food under link/ebt. One of the only places in East Garfield Park that takes link/ebt.
